What is Lactic Acid and why does it work?
Lactic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) that has been studied extensively for its ability to improve skin texture, even skin tone, and gently exfoliate the surface of the skin. It's one of the most well-researched acids in skincare, and for good reason! It works, and it works for almost everyone.
What makes lactic acid stand out from other chemical exfoliants like glycolic acid is that it's less sensitizing. It does the same job, breaking down the bonds between dead skin cells so they can fall away, but it does it more gently. That makes it accessible to a wider range of people, including those with more reactive skin types.
The Lactic Serum formulates it at 10% alongside 1% hyaluronic acid, organic white tea extract, and organic sage extract. You get the exfoliation, the hydration, and some antioxidant support all in one step.

Three Ways
Lactic Acid
Changes Your Skin
Lactic acid works on three levels simultaneously, which is why people see results quickly and why those results keep compounding over time.
Lactic Acid Exfoliates!
Lactic acid loosens the bonds that hold dead skin cells to the surface. Over the next day or two after use, those cells shed on their own, much more efficiently than they would naturally. That's what creates smoother skin texture. You can feel it when you wash your face the morning after application.
Lactic acid is a humectant!
It draws water from the deeper layers of your skin and from the environment into the upper layers, and it helps prevent excess water loss. Paired with 1% hyaluronic acid in The Lactic Serum, this means you're exfoliating and hydrating at the same time, so it doesnt strip the skin down.
Lactic acid reduces hyperpigmentation!
As a tyrosinase inhibitor, it directly suppresses the enzyme responsible for melanin production. So it doesn't just exfoliate existing pigmentation away. It also works to prevent new hyperpigmentation from forming. This is backed by peer-reviewed research in Experimental Dermatology (2003) and confirmed in a 2025 study in Molecules.
That tingle you feel? It’s a good sign!
When you apply lactic acid, you may feel a tingling sensation on the skin.
That is the acid doing exactly what it's supposed to do! Breaking apart the bonds between dead skin cells. It's essentialy confirmation that it's working.
As a licensed aesthetician, here's how I gauge it: on a scale of one to ten, when 10 is completely unbearable on the skin, a four to eight is completely normal when you're starting out.
What you want to avoid is anything that feels overwhelming. That would be a ten, and it means you should rinse it off and give your skin more time before trying again.
Mild or nothing
0-3
You might not feel much at all. That's okay! It is still working, but it could mean you have a thicker layer of dead skin cells to work through, or you're just less reactive. Go ahead and move to twice a week.
Normal Range
4-8
This is exactly where you want to be when you're starting out. A noticeable tingle that settles within a minute or two. Stay at once a week until it eases, then increase frequency from there.
Intense
9-10
If it feels like your skin is on fire and it isn't settling after a few minutes, rinse it off. Your skin barrier may need more time. Wait another week do it again. It just means you needed a slower start.

Results dont happen overnight…
Well, some of them do
Here's the honest timeline. Some changes happen fast. Others take consistent use over time. Both are worth it.
Day 1 - 2 after first use
Smoother texture, more hydrated skin.
This is the first thing most people notice. The lactic acid loosens the dead skin cells on the surface, and as you wash your face over the next day or two, those cells shed much more easily than they would on their own. Your skin feels softer. And because lactic acid is also a humectant, it pulls moisture into the surface layer, so you'll also feel more hydrated after your first use.
Weeks 2 - 6
Brighter appearance, visible improvement in skin tone.
With consistent use, you'll start to notice your skin looking brighter overall. This is the exfoliation compounding! Your skin is turning over more efficiently, and the fresher cells underneath are coming through. This is also when early melanin inhibition starts to show up. You won't have cleared existing pigmentation yet, but your skin's overall radiance improves noticeably because youre preventing excess from forming.
Month 2 and beyond
Fading hyperpigmentation, softer fine lines.
Pigmentation is deep in the skin. Getting rid of it takes time because the skin has to push it out as it resurfaces. Lactic acid's dual action really pays off by accelerating turnover to shed the pigmented cells, while also inhibiting the enzyme that creates new melanin. Collagen and elastin stimulation also takes time, but with consistent use you'll start to see fine lines soften.

Start Slow & Build From There
The frequency of your use depends on whether you've ever used a chemical exfoliant before. Here's exactly how to introduce it without excess sensitivity personalized to you!
-
Start once a week! Apply to clean, dry skin in the evening. Leave it on, and after about 2 minutes for the product to dry down, follow with your moisturizer.
Start once a week for one to three weeks. Watch how your skin responds. When the tingle feels mild or settles quickly, you're ready to increase.
-
Move to 2–3x a Week. Once your skin has adjusted, increase to twice a week, then three times a week if your skin tolerates it well.
Three times a week is a solid maintenance frequency for most people. You can reach this level after about 2-3 months of use. Generally we recommend monday, wednesday, froday to allow some time in between applications.
You don't need to use it every day, remember that more is not better with exfoliation.
-
If you're also using a retinol or retinoid, keep your lactic acid use to a maximum of twice a week. Both are actives. Layering them too aggressively can over-exfoliate the skin and compromise your barrier. Space out your use of actives with days of rest in between when possible.
One of the few actives
you dont have to give up
while pregnant!
Most people are told to strip their entire skincare routine the moment they find out they're pregnant. And while there are genuinely ingredients to avoid, lactic acid is not one of them.
AHAs like lactic acid are considered safe during pregnancy because they stay on the skin surface. They don't absorb into the bloodstream in significant amounts, meaning they don't reach the baby.
That's what makes the difference between what's safe to apply topically and what isn't.
That said: always check with your OB or dermatologist. And as with any active, start slow and watch how your skin responds as pregnancy can make skin more sensitive than usual.
-
"Lactic acid 2% has been anecdotally used to treat gestational acne with no reported fetal risks and has shown negligible dermal penetration."
